Highlights: The 1st Wei Distinguished Lecture Series in Journalism, 2025

The 1st Wei Distinguished Lecture Series in Journalism, hosted by the Wei Fund for Educational and Journalistic Excellence, was successfully held on November 14, 2025, at the Center for Public and Business Administration Education (CPBAE), National Chengchi University. The forum centered on the Survival of the Media, Ecosystem Transformation, and the Upholding of Journalistic Ethics in the Age of AI. It brought together prominent international voices and Taiwanese media leaders to chart a course for sustainable development amidst technological disruption.

The lecture aimed to address the escalating challenge of fake news and the profound impact of AI on content credibility and operational models. Attendees engaged in a deep dialogue—from practical industry concerns to academic perspectives—on how to preserve the public value of news content, elevate editorial professionalism, and create new revenue streams in an AI-driven environment.

Key highlights included:

  • Forward-Looking Trends and Payment Models: Marcus Brauchli, former Editor-in-Chief of The Washington Post, delivered a major proposal, suggesting that AI services will likely be required to "pay the quoted media" for content usage, emphasizing the necessary restructuring of intellectual property rights for industry survival.
  • Data Warnings and Value Recalibration: Content Director Fan Ling-chia of the United Daily News cited data indicating that generative AI search tools register an average error rate exceeding 60%, stressing the importance of media pursuing "Truth" over mere "Factuality."
  • Transformation and Talent: Chen Yi-shan (CommonWealth Magazine EIC) and Li Xue-li (The Reporter COO) highlighted that the core journalistic value lies in disseminating accurate information and generating empathy through truthful storytelling, predicting the rise of smaller, vertical media outlets and specialized individual journalists.
  • Strategies for Co-existence: Li Zhi-wei (The News Lens CTO) proposed that the industry should look toward three strategic directions—"Blocking and Protecting," "Analyzing and Adapting," and "Negotiating and Sharing"—to find a path to co-existence with AI.

The afternoon roundtable segment, guided by Professor Fang Nien-hsuan of NCCU's Journalism Department, focused on strengthening independent thinking in journalist training and discussing transparency to maintain reader trust. Brauchli concluded by stressing the critical importance of communicating to readers that news reporting "is a matter of democracy." This forum provided a vital platform for cross-sector reflection, marking a crucial starting point for the media industry's commitment to public service amidst technological upheaval.
