Mission and Development Goals
The Wei Ming-Kuang Fund for Educational and Journalistic Excellence aims to enhance the professional capacity and expertise of journalism and communication talents in Taiwan. By supporting the College of Communication at National Chengchi University, the Fund seeks to strengthen teaching quality, encourage industry–academia collaboration, and cultivate media professionals with a global vision, technological literacy, and a strong sense of social responsibility.
The Fund focuses on four key areas of development:
- Strengthening the International Perspective of Journalism:
In an era of globalization, journalists must be equipped to understand and report on cross-border issues. The Fund invites leading international media professionals to deliver lectures, talks, and exchanges, helping students broaden their outlook and deepen their understanding of global trends and journalistic ethics. - Advancing the Integration of Journalism and Technology:
As media technologies rapidly evolve, journalism must continually adapt its storytelling methods and communication tools. The Fund supports courses and workshops on emerging topics such as artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and data journalism, enabling students and working journalists to grasp innovative practices and the social responsibilities that accompany digital transformation. - Cultivating the Social Engagement of Journalism:
The core mission of journalism lies in holding power accountable and promoting social progress. The Fund encourages students to participate in issue-based reporting initiatives, strengthening their critical thinking and problem-solving skills while inspiring them to consider how journalism can drive social change and serve the public good. - Highlighting the Strengths of NCCU’s Journalism Education:
Distinct from conventional scholarships or journalism awards, the Fund leverages NCCU’s strong foundation in the humanities and social sciences to design lectures, grant programs, and journalism awards that integrate academic values with professional practice, fostering meaningful dialogue between theory and industry.
Three Key Strategies
The Fund will achieve its core goals of attracting, developing, and retaining talent through three main initiatives: scholarships, journalism lectures, and journalism awards.
Attracting Talent — Encouraging Young People to Enter Journalism and Communication
- With higher education resources increasingly favoring STEM fields, the humanities and social sciences face growing enrollment challenges. The Fund provides attractive scholarship opportunities to encourage motivated young people—whether in high school or university—to pursue studies in the humanities, social sciences, and journalism-related disciplines.
- Developing Talent — Providing Professional Knowledge and Practical Training
The Fund regularly organizes thematic journalism lectures and workshops to equip students and young practitioners with industry insights and professional skills, fostering passion and commitment to journalistic work. - Retaining Talent — Supporting the Long-Term Development of Journalists
Recognizing the challenges and transitions within journalistic careers, the Fund has established the Wei Ming-Kuang Prize to recognize professionals who demonstrate excellence and social commitment at various stages of their careers, encouraging their continued growth and dedication to journalistic ideals.
